Crazy Eights

(Disclaimer: I've had this in my drafts folder since November of 2007. I've updated it to change some of my answers since then. I think everyone should do this every two years. You'd be surprised at how much changes…or doesn't change.)

Thanks to Lisa here's my Crazy 8's. (btw, what's up with the crazy blog name, Lisa? You certainly are not refusing to blog…)

8 Things I’m Passionate About

1. My Family. They are each individual in personality and desires and I admire and love each of them.

2. My Critters. Yeah. I know. They are "only" animals, right? Wrong. They are very much a part of my life.

3. Reading. I've mentioned before that I can usually go through a book every day or so. Hubs' teases me the library is going to run out one of these days. I've been a reader since I can remember – sneaking around at night reading by any glimmer of light I could get, be it from the streetlight outside my window or the dial of my radio or the little bulb lighting up my electric blanket.

4. Computers. They frustrate me on some levels but on others they challenge me and I like that. I enjoy a good 'fist pump' when I solve some stupid problem that I know I should be able to get but struggle with. When it all works? YES! I've never had any formal training in the things, but for the most part I have a logical enough (Spock-brain?) mind to "think" like the machine. I always thought it would be fun to take some computer courses sometime and see what it is I really don't know…

5. Writing. Along with reading, I've been writing since I can remember. I never kept any sort of a formal "journal" until the blog stuff started, and you probably think since I've been so fits-and-starts this last year that I'm petering out, but I just have this urge to get things out on paper. As an only child and one who spent loads of time alone and had lots of frustrations in my world, I used it as a great escape to vent, dream, and venture into my own head. Probably if I hadn't been writing it all out I may have ended up with way more mental problems along the way. Just a guess.

6. Crafts. Although I feel very passionate about the crafty type things I like to do, my dilemma is I have tooo many of them that I enjoy. I rubber stamp, sew, crochet, knit, cross-stitch, paint, dabble in photography… and have the supplies and attending 'crap' to prove it. As a matter of fact, Hubs calls my "craft" room my "crap" room. He's more right than I care to admit.

7. Gardening. I don't know if this is a passion or just one of those things I can't seem to stop doing to myself. Every spring I get all excited and plant stuff, then spend the summer getting sunburnt and aching muscles, and finally by the time fall gets here I am so sick of it all I can't even put the gardens "to bed" properly. (Fellow gardeners know what that means.) It is rather like my enjoyment of cross-stitch. I really don't enjoy the process, I just enjoy the end result.

8. Cooking. Passion? Not sure if that's the right term for it, but I do enjoy it. My favorite is when the wind is howling and there is snow on the ground and I have the fireplace going and am whipping up some soup or stew and bread and some yummy dessert… and the house smells so good. Excuse me, I have to go wipe the drool off now.

8 Things I Want To Do Before I Die:

1. Write a book or two.
2. Get my photographs organized
3. Go to Ireland
4. Get all the crap out of my house and have the things left well-organized so my family doesn't have a horrible job ahead of them dealing with it all once I'm gone
5. Retire and spend time using all those craft supplies
6. See all my children happy, healthy and at peace – whether it be in a relationship or not.
7. Be sure that everyone I love knows I love them.
8. I'd like to meet some bloggers…you know, in REAL LIFE.

8 Things I Say Often:

1. Shit.
2. What's up?
3. WTF!?!
4. Fuck.
5. Me too! (Hub's and my ever-so-secret code for I love you)
6. You're kidding.
7. Dumbass
8. Bullshit.

(I cuss a lot, don't I?)

8 Books I’ve read recently: (I'm not answering this because they all blur together. Go to any Amazon or Borders Bookstore website, click on the first eight books you see in either mystery, horror, or fiction categories and I will have read them.I will however, list some of my favorite authors.)

1. Stephen King
2. Dean Koontz
3. Lee Childs
4. Patricia Cornwell
5. Michael Connelly
6. David Baldacci
7. James Patterson
8. Jonathan Kellerman

8 Songs I Could Listen To Over And Over: (Again, I have music running most of the time and can't pick on song as they change. I'll just list some favorite musicians.
1. October Project
2. Sheryl Crow
3. Nickleback
4. Linkin Park
5. Five for Fighting
6. Diana Krall
7. Sarah McLachlan
8. Dave Matthews Band

8 Things That Attract Me To My Best Friends: (Friends? What are those?)

1. No bullshit.
2. No bullshit.
3. No bullshit.
4. No bullshit.
5. No bullshit.
6. No bullshit.
7. No bullshit.
8. No bullshit.

T.J. Said “Tag”

Just because T.J.  told me he tagged me, I'm doing this. Why? I'm just like that.

Four Things

4 Films I'd watch again (in no particular order) (only 4? crap)

1. The Shawshank Redemption. Every time I watch this I see something else. As a huge Stephen King fan, this is one of the few books or stories of his that I've actually liked when it got made into a film. I'm a huge fan of Morgan Freeman, too.

2. Fight Club Another one I just see something different in each time. Plus? Brad Pitt. Need I say more?

3. Sliding Doors The whole "what if" scenerio really plays into my imagination. It may not be the best movie ever made, but I find it fun to watch.

4. Se7en What can I say? Brad Pitt AND Morgan Freeman! Plus, it's creepy. I like creepy. Oh, yeah, and the totally unexpected ending. Got me – lots of movies don't. I usually figure them out ahead of time. This one? This one got me. Huge brownie points for that.

4 Places I've lived: (you'll see a pattern here)

1. Des Moines, Iowa

2. Storm Lake, Iowa (when my mom died and I was living with my grandparents for about 3 years)

3. Grinnell, Iowa

4. Ames, Iowa

4 T.V. shows I watch: (again, only 4?!?)

1. Wire in the Blood. New season starting soon. YAY!

2. Doctor Who. I came to this one late, just in the last couple of years. Now hooked thoroughly, however.

3. Torchwood. A spin-off of Doctor Who, it may even be better. Lots of fun with aliens (the space kind).

4. Lost I don't even know where to start about why I like this show. What I hate? Having to wait for the next episode!!

4 Things to eat:

1. Chocolate. In any shape or form.

2. Steak. A very well prepared, rare to medium-rare grilled steak. Yes, I eat meat. I crave meat if I don't have it often enough.

3. Potatoes. I like a good potato. Baked,  fries, hash browns, mashed… mmmm…mashed… s'pose it is the Irish in me?

4. Lobster or crab. It's a toss-up. I love them both with melted butter. No breading, no fancy casserole, no garlic, just give me butter and my fingers (oh, and one of those shell-cracker thingys)

4 Places I'd rather be:

1. Home.

2. Ireland.

3. Home.

4. Home.

4 People to tag:

I'm not gonna tag anyone, because I've seen this out there a bunch and there are prolly lots of you that have done it.

If you are bored and want to do it, just let me know so I can come check out your answers!

That's all '4' now.  (I think T.J. wrote that, but I found it amusing so it stays…)

Tagged by the Great Whall

Back in January I was tagged for this and didn't get around to doing it until now. Sorry, Wayne. What can I say? The dog ate my e-mail? Go check out his post to figure out where my answers came from. This wasn't as hard as I was afraid it was going to be…

1. Do you like blue cheese?
Ick. Ick. Ick. Does that answer the question?

42. How many dogs do you have?
Three that are mine, but four live with us.

43. What are you thrilled about right now?

Random Meme #478

I stole another one from Kapgar. I'm not sure if there is any rhyme or reason to this one. They seem to be rather random questions, but some are interesting, so here we go again:

1. What were you afraid of as a child?
My parents. Harsh, but true.

2. When have you been most courageous?
When my daughter was born two months premature and I had to stay in the hospital for three days in a different hospital from her – before I could see her. Those were very rough days, not knowing if she was going to live or die and not even being able to see her.

3. What sound most disturbs you?
Animals or children that you can tell are in pain. Not necessarily in that order.

4. What is the greatest amount of physical pain you’ve been in?
Besides childbirth (four times)? I had pleurosy early in my first pregnancy. It hurt just to breath – I mean, you just wanted to hold your breath forever it hurt so bad. I couldn't take medication because of being pregnant, so suffered through. Other pains you can suffer with, but if you can't breath… well, makes it kind of hard to do everything else.

5. What’s your biggest fear for your children? (or children in general if you don’t have some of your own.)
Having to bury them. I know it's cliche to say this, but no parent should have to bury their children.  (Kapgar said this but I agree perfectly so left it). I would have to say my second biggest fear for them is that I will lose my mind and they'll have to pick up the pieces. I've put them through enough along those lines to last a lifetime.

6. What is the hardest physical challenge you’ve achieved?
Hmmm… I am not a physcial person so it isn't like I've climbed a mountain or anything. I guess just getting through all the medical stuff I've been through, including my back surgery. It's pretty scary when they tell you they're going in through the front of your neck and you may never talk again.

7. Which do you prefer: Mountains or oceans/big water?
No preference. I like them both and live near neither.

8. What is the one thing you do for yourself that helps you keep everything together?
I am? Keeping it together? Mwhaaa haaa haaa…

9. Ever had a close relative or friend with cancer?
Yes. Too many to count.

10. What are the things your friends count on you for?
I don't know. Honestly. I'm a bad friend… I guess you'd have to ask them that.

11. What is the best part of being in a committed relationship?
Oh, where do I begin? Having someone who, when you are having a bad day, can honestly say "I'm on your side" and you know they mean it. Who can wrap you in their arms and not even say a word and make you feel safe and loved and have a tremendous calming effect on you. So many other things – too many to list.

12. What is the hardest part of being in a committed relationship?
Oh, where do I begin? Kidding. I think the hardest part is the same as the kid question. I fear if he dies first… I fear if I die first. I have kind of a death phobia. I've lost too many people at a young age. I don't feel as old as I am and I think I should be taking better care of myself and he should be taking better care of himself and we both think we'll live forever… or at least we think we'll die together. I kind of think we should be a little more concerned about it.

13. Summer or Winter? Why?
Winter. Absolutely. It is my season. The season of the fireplace and the homemade bread and the stews and soups and the curling up with a book and not having work as hard or worry about the crops in the field or the flower beds needing weeding or watering or de-bugging.

14. Have you ever been in a school-yard fight? Why and what happened?
No. I was witness to one. Once. In junior high. Scared the crap out of me. It was broken up before it got too bad, but I don't respond well to violence.

15. Why blog?
Why not?

16. Did you learn about sex, and/or sex safety from your parents?
I remember my mother telling me about it when I was pretty young, then we had sex ed in school but I already knew it by then. Mom said she told me early on because she didn't want me to be "surprised" when I got my first period. She could have saved her breath. I was a 'late bloomer'.

17. How do you plan to talk to your kids about sex and/or sex safety?
Well… seeing as the youngest one is 24, I think hope suspect my job is done.

18. What are you most thankful for this year?
I've too many things to claim just one… I guess I'll just say, go back and review my last week's worth of posts. I hit the high spots.

More Questions – via Amy

I realize I'm probably not keeping with the spirit of the whole Nano-whatcha-ma-callit but in my world, this is a post.

These came by way of Amy a long, long time ago… thank goodness! Some days you just have to resort to meme's.

1. What is your occupation? Wife to one, mom to four, grandma to one, critter wrangler to several, farm partner… oh… what do I get paid for? Computer stuff that it would take me a half an hour to explain.

2. What color are your socks right now? White (nerd jokes will not be tolerated)

3. What are you listening to right now? My printer warming up for takeoff, the fan on my heater, men laughing at something I can't hear in the outer office

4. What was the last thing that you ate? A banana

5. Can you drive a stick shift? Yes. Yes I can.

6. Last person you spoke to on the phone? My husband

7. Do you like the person who sent this meme to you? Of course! I wouldn't do it for someone I didn't like!

8. How old are you today? 50 going on 20

9. Favorite drink? Pepsi One or milk

10. What is your favorite sport to watch? Uhhhh…is "Dr. Who" a sport? 😉

11. Have you ever dyed your hair? The question isn't have I ever, it is do I remember before I started?

12. Pets? Currently I have five cats, three dogs (2 shih tzu's and a beagle) and also currently taking care of my daughter's shih tzu.

13. Favorite food? Only one? Well… I'll make it simple. Chocolate. In all honesty, there aren't too many foods I don't like and they can all be considered favorites at one time or another.

14. What was the last movie you watched? Oh, gosh. It's been so long! I think in a theater it was the Bourne movie where we sat in the front row. Made me motion sick and I had to close my eyes for most of the movie. At home? Um… not sure. I know we rented some, but can't remember what they were.

15. What's your favorite day of the week? Usually Saturday, except this time of year when I have to work.

16. How do you vent anger? I blog… or cry…and yell… or all of them.

17. What was your favorite toy as a child? I had a stuffed dog that I slept with.

18. What is your favorite season? I like a lot of things about fall, but not the part that makes my life so busy between my 'town' job and the farm that I'm not really able to enjoy it. I think I would have to say winter – the dead of winter – when there is snow on the ground and I have no yard work, no field work, my job slows down, and the farm bookwork has been 'put to bed' for the year. That is my very favorite time, but it doesn't last nearly long enough.

19. Hugs or kisses? If we're talking chocolate, kisses… if we're talkin' other stuff, hugs.

20. Cherries or Blueberries? Cherries…mmmm

21. Do you want your friends to try this meme? sure!

22. Who is most likely to respond? someone who is bored and/or can't think of anything to post either

23. Who is least likely to respond? anyone with a life who knows what to post and hates memes

24. Living arrangements? I have one. I mean, yes. I mean, I live with my husband and all my critters. The kids are grown and at the moment all are living elsewhere.

25. When was the last time you cried? A few days ago at some stupid animal rescue commercial (thanks Sarah Mclaughlin) or "Extreme Home Makeover" or something.

26. What is on the floor of your closet? Uh…dog toys

27. Who is the friend you have known the longest that you are sending this to? I'm not sending it anywhere. So there.

28. What did you do last night? Worked late, did some laundry, did some dishes, took care of some critters, cooked supper, watched a little TV, read a little, slept (not enough.)

29. Favorite smell? fresh mown grass, citrus and sage candles, vanilla

30. What inspires you? if I ever figure it out I'll let you know

31. What are you afraid of? never being good enough

32. Plain, cheese or spicy hamburgers? cheeseburgers

33. Favorite dog breed? shih tzu

34. How many states have you lived in? only one

35. Favorite holiday? Thanksgiving – all the fun of Christmas without the money burden

Honestly, I don't know who came up with all of these as they were pretty random, but at least I didn't have to come up with anything original today I did them! Help yourself, if you want to do them too.

Love Will Make Me Do This Meme

This one is called Love Will Keep Us Together and kapgar did it and said I could steal it.

1. Who is your partner?
Hubs. (C'mon, this is the i-net, you didn't think I'd give you his real name?)

2. How long have you been together?
Married, going on 28 – together 29

3. How long did you date?
I'm not sure I would call it dating. We moved in together about a month after we met. (Don't listen kids.)

4. How old is your partner?
6-1/2 years older than I am

5. Who eats more?
Depends on what it is. Could be a toss up.

6. Who said “I love you” first?
Me. He wanted to be sure.

7. Who is taller?
He is.

8. Who sings better?
Me. He can't carry a tune to save his life. Too bad, because he has a nice deep sound.

9. Who is smarter?
We're smarter in different areas. He remembers things like math equations from high school. Me? No clue. I know lots of trivial things, tho'.

10. Whose temper is worse?
Again, it is a toss-up. He can flare up fast, but cools off fast. Me? I stay mad. For years.

11. Who does the laundry?
Me.

12. Who takes out the garbage?
I take it out of the house as far as the garage, he loads it from there and takes it out to the dumpster.

13. Who sleeps on the right side of the bed?
As we face the bed from the footboard it would be me.

14. Who pays the bills?
Me.

15. Who is better with the computer?
Me.

16. Who mows the lawn?
He does. I used to all the time at the old house, but since we've moved he has done it except, maybe, twice.

17. Who cooks dinner?
Mainly me. He will grill occasionally or pick up pizza (that qualifies in our house as his cooking) but typically me.

18. Who drives when you are together?
Depends on the vehicle. He won't drive my VW Bug, Skippy (I even told him I'd take out the flower and put in a button-weed). If we have the pickup or the Tahoe, we take turns depending on if one of us is drinking or too tired to drive or just plain doesn't want to.

19. Who pays when you go out?
All money is shared. Having said that, he usually carries cash to pay when we go out. However, if he is running short and I have cash, I will give it to him and tell him "you can be the man". Don't yell at me. Yes, it is sexist. It's just a joke.

20. Who is most stubborn?
Do I have to say?…. okay, yeah, it's me. See anger above. 😉

21. Who is the first to admit when they are wrong?
He is. Always. I am better than I used to be, tho'. Honest.

22. Whose parents do you see the most?
He sees his mom pretty much daily as his shop is on her farm. Me? It is a toss up. I tried to avoid all of them.

23. Who kissed who first?
I honestly can't remember. I think it was a joint effort.

24. Who asked who out?
A friend of mine was dating his brother. When I finally met him, he asked my girlfriend if she would ask me if I wanted to go out sometime. We both thought the first date (a group effort) was a disaster and to my surprise, he asked her to ask me again. The second time we double dated with just his brother and my friend and the rest, as they say, is history…

25. Who proposed?
He made the first move by asking me to move in with him, but I kind of pushed the 'making it official'… he did the actual asking.

26. Who is more sensitive?
Wow. Well, I think I am, but then he's gotten a bit softer over the years. All that training I've done with him. 🙂

27. Who has more friends?
If I count all my friends in blogland? HE still wins.He makes friends like no body can. He's one of those guys who can talk to anyone. Drives me crazy.

28. Who has more siblings?
He does. He has a brother and sister (both younger). I am an only child.

29. Who wears the pants in the family?
Although physically I wear pants every day… he does. Definately.

Okay, now your turn. If you want it, come and take it.

Evolution Meme

Nickel aka Sweet Thing and Jan got me with another one. This one wasn't quite as clear at first. As a matter of fact, I got Nickel's e-mail first and even after reading her blog post wasn't sure what the meme involved. I had to go to her husband Guy's blog to figure it out! Either I'm slow or Nickel needs to explain a bit better. She's new to the blogsphere, tho', so we'll give her a break.

The rules seem to be "to participate in a blog meme about the evolution of my blog" and then see if you can con some other suckers into doing the same and thereby giving you some links. Here goes~

I've always been a writer. I started out when I was in school as a way to escape. I didn't have a "Leave It To Beaver"  or "Make Room for Daddy" home life, and as an only child I spent lots of time hiding out in my room. I found reading and then writing to be a great way to get things out. Since I was only able to run screaming through the house on those rare occasions my parents were gone, the writing was a great "internal scream", if you will. I don't remember how I heard about blogs. I think I'd heard about them long before I actually realized what they were. After going to a few and realizing that I, too, could do this thing I took the plunge. I found some wonderful role models early on like Sizzle and Helen who opened up their souls and bared it all and I figured if these women could be so brave and beautiful then maybe I could give it a try. I'm still thrilled to call them both blog-friends.

The name comes from a book I was writing – and may someday actually get done. I had visions of all these scraps of paper I'd written on over the years and how somehow they all ended up being torn sheets from something else… a notebook, a napkin… torn pages of my thoughts.

I also have blogged about 're-writing history' and I wanted to be sure and get down some facts in black and white (or brown and beige or blue and purple… yeah, I change templates a lot…hi Brad.) I opened myself up on The Dark Madness to spill the blood, so to speak… and get out some of those nightmares into the daylight.

Evolution? For one thing I think I've become more open. I have always been honest but now open myself up without as much thought to being criticized or shunned. I'm pretty open on here, too, about who I am and my family and I'm pretty sure anyone who tried hard enough (or not that hard) could find me in the real world. The only real change I've made is to go back and change the names of my dogs. They're very unique names and unique spellings and when you search for them my blog comes up number one in search engines – yeah, they're that different. So I've changed those just to try and keep a bit more privacy… but I know that anyone who wanted to find me could.

There. I think I got the gist of the meme out. Because I'm curious, I'm actually going to tag a couple of people with this one:

Fantastagirl, Sizzle, Katie, PlazaJen, and last but far from least, Kapgar. Okay, now I gotta go tell 'em. Have a  Happy Monday!

Another Random 8 Meme

This time I got tagged by Nikki. She's got a new blog about HER little red head and since we have that in common, we've created a blog-bond. Although I've done this one before, I'll try to think of new answers…

The rules:
1. Let others know who tagged you.
2. Players start with 8 random facts about themselves.
3. Those who are tagged should post these rules and their 8 random facts.
4. Players should tag 8 other people and notify them they have been tagged.

Right, here we go!

1.I never sneeze less than 3 times in a row, usually more, and always after a choking episode.

2.I like to cook, love to eat, and hate to clean up.

3.I can't eat fennel seeds. You never want to give me Italian sausage with fennel seeds. You don't want to give me a pizza that has Italian sausage. It isn't pretty. Trust me.

4.There have been two times in my life I have blacked out from alcohol. The first time my memory gradually came back in flashbacks. The second time it never did come back. Luckily, I was with my husband and he took care of me and told me exactly what happened. It freaks me out to this day that I can't remember it. After that it scared me so bad I rarely drink now and if I do, never to excess.

5.I'm a horrible friend in real life. I'm much better with animals.

6.I was a bad mother. I'm much better now.

7.I've never eaten sushi, but love seafood. I think I would like it.

8.I bite my nails so badly that I've worn fake ones for 25 years.

Wow! I feel purged!

Your turn! I know these go around a lot, so not sure who has and who hasn't done it. If you want to, let us know you will… otherwise I won't bug you to do it.

Talk Like a Pirate Day! *Updated*

Today. In case you forgot. I caught drift of this when it happened last year, but sadly it was after the fact. Because I'm not good at second languages I'll just say "Arrr" a few times and hope the parrot doesn't shit on my head.

With all the recent drama (if you don't know what I mean you've been living in a box, page down a bit) around here, then my trip out of town to visit Rick's I thought we could use a bit of light-hearted frivolity. In the spirit of the day I have a question. When you hear the word WENCH what do you think of? Tell me the first thing that pops in your head.

Now without changing your opinion I'm going to tell you I'm also known as Wench in my make-believe life. Relax, this is no big reveal that I'm not actually living the life of a farmer's wife in the heartland but am actually The Donald's Love Child. No, I'm talking about one of my other time-wasting pastimes. I'm nowhwere near as pre-occupied with it as I once was (mainly due to sub-standard internet service) but as I've mentioned before I have a (small) addiction to World of Warcraft. In the game you must have a unique name which in itself is not as easy as it sounds. For some reason I hit on the word "wench" with other combinations, i.e. Wikkedwench, Deathwench, Motherwench, and it became my unique signature.

Hubs hates it. He doesn't play, but he knows that's what I'm called and he has negative connotations associated with it. Me? Not so much. (I even have a male character I created that resembles him and named Manwench just to freak out my kids who play…Heh.)

Anywhoo – that is the first part of this post, to ask what do you think of when you hear WENCH?

The second reason is a meme. I was originally tagged by Olivia and begged off because I'm feeling a bit vulnurable right now with all the attention I've gotten lately and didn't want to give out my real middle name. I've not been subtle with the rest of my name but there are enough 'clones' out there I'm assured a bit of anonomity. However, when Michael tagged me again with the same game the lightbulb went off in my head and I decided to do it with my 'fake' middle name. (The rules say you can make up a name but I really wanted one that had some association to me and until I thought of WoW, because that's how I actually met Michael, I was being dense.) So, Olivia and Michael, here I give you my response to your 'tag' – using WENCH.

Rules: Players, you must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of your middle name. If you do not have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have. At the end of your blog post you need to choose one person for each letter of your middle name to tag. Do not forget to leave them a comment telling them they are tagged and to read your blog.

W – Woman, hear me roar. If you are too young to remember this song… well, then damn, I am Old. No, Old doesn't start with W. Worn Out however, does.

E – Elegant. (Can you hear my family laughing from there?) yeah… not so much. I'm more Earthy. With a touch of Elephant and a bit of Excitement and a lot of Evolving.

N – Nice. Most of the time.

C – Complicated. If you don't believe me, ask my husband.

H – Helpful? Happy? Haunted? Hopeful? Helpless? All of the above.

Since I have a name with five letters I'm supposed to tag five people. Ya know what, tho'? In honor of "Talk Like a Pirate Day" I'll just let you walk the plank. If you want to play, let me know. Arrr.

*Update*
My pirate name is:
Red Bess Rackham

Passion is a big part of your life, which makes sense for a pirate. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!
